Rowdies Lose 2-1 to the Carolina RailHawks

FC Tampa Bay Rowdies fall 2-1 to Carolina RailHawks at Steinbrenner Field.

A poor defensive performance in the first half doomed the Rowdies (6-9-9) to a 2-1 loss to the visiting Carolina RailHawks (9-7-7) on Wednesday night.  First half goals from Matt Bobo and Etienne Barbara gave Carolina a two-goal lead at the halftime break.

“The first half was the worst defensively that we’ve ever been.  We just keep conceding the first goal.  There’s no sugarcoating it; it’s happened too many times,” said Head Coach Paul Dalglish.  “It gets very very frustrating.  There were mistakes in the first half that should never ever happen.”

Miscommunications among the defensive line meant opportunities for the RailHawks forwards to get into one-on-one or two-on-one situations multiple times in the opening 45 minutes.  Bobo’s 23rd minute goal came from a free header after a Daniel Paladini corner kick.

Matt Watson set up the second goal for Barbara after a clever through ball released the forward towards goal on his own in the 40th minute.

If not for crucial saves in the first half, Carolina could have had a lead larger than two goals.

“We kept our line way too high.  They were clever putting the balls right through the back.  Two-v-one facing me is never a good thing for me or any team.  I just think our back five weren’t all on the same page,” said goalkeeper Daryl Sattler, who recorded six saves in the match.

The insertion of winger Pascal Millien at the halftime break rejuvenated the Rowdies’ offensive movement.  As the second half progressed in heavy rain, Millien and his teammates were limited by the growing puddles collecting on the infield dirt.

“I made a change at halftime that seemed to work.  I knew we were going to score and then I was pretty confident that we were going to get another one as well.  Pascal Millien came on and did great as an attacking fullback.  We caused them a lot of problems and made them earn a victory in the second half,” said Dalglish.

FC Tampa Bay looked like they might just steal a point from this game after all with a flurry of late offensive activity.  Second half substitute Aaron Wheeler sent a header just wide of Carolina goalkeeper Nic Platter’s right hand post in the 80th minute.

Ricardo Sanchez shifted the balance of the match with an 88th minute free kick goal from about 27 yards away from goal.  It was Sanchez’s fourth goal since joining the Rowdies last month.  Just moments later Sanchez had another chance with a free kick but put his shot just over the crossbar.  In the 64th minute a Sanchez free kick struck the crossbar before going out of bounds.

With the Rowdies trailing 2-1 in stoppage time, Maykel Galindo nearly scored the equalizer after his shot beat Platter.  The ball was cleared by a RailHawks defender about one foot from the goal line.

The Rowdies will look to rebound from the loss when they host AC St. Louis this Sunday, August 29 at 6:00 p.m.
